Bust of the Month – Westville
One up for the good guys this time!
At 3pm on 4 November the Westville Crime Prevention Division (W/O van Staden and Const. Clark) received a call of a house robbery in progress in Sunnybrae Drive in Westville North. They were on the scene, in heavy rain, within 3 minutes and found Reaction officer Krishna Moodley from Blue Security already there.
He pointed out a very sorry looking suspect at the top of the driveway who had been shot twice. Near the suspect was his firearm, a loaded semi-auto pistol. The security officer was quick to inform the SAPS that a second suspect had fled the scene and gave a good description. Within 15 minutes Metro and SAPS dog units had cornered and arrested the second suspect. Back at the scene Krishna showed the attending police his bullet-proof vest. Exactly 1cm from the bottom left hand corner of the Kevlar protection a bullet fired by the suspect had struck and had been stopped. Talk about a close call! One inch lower . . .

SEPTEMBER BUST OF THE MONTH
Often, a healthy dose of luck goes with the skill and experience of Police work to get good successes. Westville Crime Prevention members Cst Naiker and Cst (f) Coles had one such incident in September for which they were awarded Bust of the Month.
While patrolling Dawncliffe area they spotted a suspicious vehicle with three occupants and decided to stop it. As they made the occupants get out the car, the passengers started running into bush with Cst Naiker in hot pursuit on foot. He managed to catch one and returned to the road with him in handcuffs. When he got back, Cst Coles told Naiker that she had searched the driver and found a firearm on him. A more thorough search of the vehicle turned up a second firearm, a crowbar, screwdrivers, gloves and several items of jewellery, coins and other suspected stolen property.
In a short time, the suspects and property were linked to a house breaking that occurred only minutes before their capture and arrest, the home owner not even aware of the incident.
Investigation is continuing and the suspects have been charged and appeared in court.
Bust of the Month
Major vehicle theft syndicate busted! Well done to the Westville SAPS
A huge breakthrough in the combating of vehicle theft in Westville and other areas was made by five policemen at Westville SAPS recently.
A vehicle was stolen that was fitted with Tracker and was traced to a parking lot in Pinetown. As it was abandoned, the police under command of Captain R.R. Maharaj decided to observe the vehicle and see who approached it. A couple of hours later, one suspect arrived and opened the bonnet and boot and was arrested. After questioning, the suspect led the police to the alleged ringleader of the gang who was found in possession of another stolen vehicle. This second arrest was made in the early hours of the morning, long after the team was due to finish
their shift.
Both suspects have been charged, remanded to custody and are appearing in court. It is believed that the alleged ringleader may be linked to many other vehicle thefts.
Well done to these five members of Westville SAPS who won this month’s Bust of the Month prize. They were given meal vouchers from Cafe Gitano as well as backpacks and caps from Sappi.
BUST OF THE MONTH – May 2010
Hard work and dedication…….once again well done to our police for going beyond the call of duty!
The May Bust of the Month goes to two members, Constables Goga and Shozi. Only being in Westville SAPS for a short time, this duo have gone to many lengths to pursue their passion of catching criminals. In previous months they have displayed excellent work in the form of arrests and recoveries but in May they excelled.
Over the month, the two (usually working together as a team) made 11 “A” class arrests (serious crimes) for offences ranging from housebreaking to house robbery. Further, the two recovered 3 vehicles in the process of the arrests. All three cars were linked to cases where they had been either stolen or hijacked from their rightful owners.
One has to take a further element into consideration. One criminal does not commit one crime then hang up his hat. With the arrested persons in custody and their fingerprints taken, I am sure we can, by linking the suspects, close many more cases both in Westville and elsewhere. These are the men we thank for making the prisons overcrowded.
