Cyberbullying part 1
As parents we need to protect our children ….
A not-so-new form of bullying has reared its head again recently. An article in the Mercury in August cited three British cases where teenage victims had eventually resorted to suicide to escape the relentless attacks. The aggressors were so ruthless that a Facebook page set up in memory of one victim still had the bullies post insulting comments on it. What I’m talking about is Cyber bullying. As communication between people of all ages has moved more into computer media, bullying of this nature can be affected right into your home or onto a cell phone. This can also make it impossible to escape as the victim doesn’t even have to be at the same school or even town as the aggressors. A cruel nature of the act is the existence of “joiner inners”. Other kids, who have no relation to the situation, simply start adding their two cents worth and therefore compounding the situation. Read the rest of this entry »

James Bond knows how to handle Criminals!
Getting creative in the fight against crime!
James Bond had the right idea. Then again, I suppose it was his job. For anyone who read the original 007 books, you would know that on the top of Bond’s mind, after women, was security. In the first book, Casino Royale, Bond hides a cheque by unscrewing a door hinge, folding up the cheque and putting it under the hinge. Who, tearing apart a room, looking for something like a cheque, would start unscrewing door hinges?
I’m not suggesting you hide all your important documents behind hinges, but we need to start thinking creatively about our security. Why I say this is merely because the stock standard thing being done just isn’t working, is it? Who really these days is surprised by a movement sensor attached to a spotlight? Do crooks flee the scene thinking you woke up and put on the light? Did you actually wake up?
Sure, have the spotlight, it is one more positive thing in the mix. But we are fooling ourselves if we believe we must stop there. Crime is a big problem, and it can appear to be overwhelming. So, I go to an old puzzle: How do you eat an elephant? Answer: One bite at a time. Let’s start small.
BROKEN LIVES RESTORED
Open Door Crisis Care Centre is playing a major role in combating Human Trafficking and helping victims….
In our last issue the article on Human Trafficking brought attention to the alarming statistics – 27 million people have been victims of human trafficking, 1.2 million children are trafficked annually half of which are children from Africa. Over 100 000 children are victims of child prostitution in South Africa alone.
During the first National Human Trafficking Conference held in Durban in March 2009 the Acting National Director of Public Prosecutions Advocate and Special Director from the Sexual Offences and Community Affairs Unit and the Media commended the KZN HPPB Task Team at Open Doors and it’s role players as being the forerunners in the country in combating this heinous crime. (HPPB is an acronym for Human Trafficking, Child Pornography, Prostitution and Brothels).
The Task Team objectives are four fold: Prevention, Protection, Prosecution and Partnerships. The Open Door Crisis Care Centre, a “one stop” crisis and trauma centre centrally situated in Pinetown, plays a major role in fulfilling the mandate to reduce the incidence of human trafficking and child pornography. The Open Door Crisis Centre is involved in prevention through education, training and workshops. Their shelter, Ikhaya La Themba, is a registered “safe House” within a secluded residential area provides accommodation for 15 abused women and vulnerable children. Ikhaya La Themba is recognised as the only shelter in Kwa Zulu Natal to accommodate victims of human trafficking where they enter into a holistic programme of counselling to bring healing and restoration, social services, medical and psychological support by a team of professional and lay counsellors. At the present time they are accommodating three ladies from Thailand who have been trafficking.
